Traffic Wales

Traffic Wales

We were asked by Traffic Wales to develop a replacement for their existing website, utilising the Welsh Government GOV.WALES Global Experience Language (GEL) compliant Drupal platform.

The aim was to create a single platform to bring together core functionality that Traffic Wales provides to the public - real time traffic alerts, and up-to-date images from traffic cameras along the motorways and trunk roads in Wales.

It was important that the traffic alerts and camera feeds were easy to find and view, information was simple to read, worked in both desktop and mobile platforms, and complied with the latest Welsh Government GEL design standards.

This needed to be paired up with infrastructure that could handle huge spikes in website traffic during poor weather conditions, for example, snow days.

What we did

  • Review of peer sites and idea generation
  • Review of current site analytics to understand current user journeys and top tasks
  • Review site traffic to understand peak site loads
  • Information architecture and wireframe prototype development
  • Welsh Government Global Expression Language compliant creative design, with a focus on a responsive/adaptive layout for mobiles and tablets alongside desktop platforms
  • Drupal content management system setup and deployment, camera dashboard, live traffic alerts feed, news tagging, social sharing, workflow and analytics reporting
  • Cloud based hosting architecture and detailed technical analysis of load and server resourcing fused with some cunning optimisation and performance enhancements
  • All pulled together by our lean project management approach – a well balanced mix of agile and waterfall, to ensure the project ran smoothly and was deployed ahead of schedule and in budget.
